Chiropractic Works for Ankle Sprains

Rockville natural ankle sprain treatmentWe see quite a few patients in our Rockville office with ankle sprains but Dr. Sarabi has had a lot of success helping them recover more quickly. Why are ankle sprains so common and how can your chiropractor help?

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), an estimated 25,000 men and women in the US sprain their ankles daily. As a matter of fact, these injuries make up almost half of all sports injuries, causing people to spend time away from the activities they enjoy most.

Like any injury, there are many causes of ankle sprains. The most frequent is inversion, or when the ankle rolls inward. This injury can take place due to one forceful movement, or it can develop over a period of time, and exercises that increase the risk for this type of ankle sprain include running and jumping. You're also at risk if you have previous ankle injuries, poor posture or balance, weak muscles, and reduced range of motion.

How Can Chiropractic Treatments and Dr. Sarabi Help?

A study printed in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics set out to identify chiropractic's role when it comes to ankle sprain recovery. Researchers enrolled 33 individuals between the ages of 18 and 45 who had a history of ankle inversion sprains, who were experiencing tenderness and/or pain, and had not re-injured the ankle in the previous six weeks.

18 of the participants were assigned to participate in rehabilitation and the other 15 subjects received chiropractic adjustments in addition to rehab. Each individual had five full weeks of therapy, with the rehab group receiving therapy seven days a week and the rehabilitation plus chiropractic group receiving treatment six out of the seven days.

Research Shows Chiropractic Helps With Ankle Sprains

The authors found that the individuals who had both rehab and chiropractic fared the best at the 4-week mark when it came to pain and joint restriction. Furthermore, no negative effects were reported, showing that chiropractic is safe.

Chiropractic Offers Long Term Benefits for Fibromyalgia Sufferers

Rockville natural fibromyalgia treatmentIf you suffer with fibromyalgia, you are not alone, as Dr. Sarabi sees many people with this particular syndrome in our Rockville chiropractic office. As a matter of fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that roughly two percent of all adults in the US have fibromyalgia. Thankfully, chiropractic care is one treatment option that can provide positive results.

Research Proves Chiropractic Helps Fibromyalgia

In a paper published in mid-2015, 215 women and men with fibromyalgia were evaluated based on factors ranging from pain to quality of sleep to the levels of depression symptoms and anxiety they felt. Then they were divided into two groups with one group receiving a multi-modal treatment program for three months and the second group receiving the same program plus chiropractic adjustments (specifically, to the upper neck area) for the same length of time.

The subjects who received chiropractic adjustments in conjunction with the multi-modal treatment program reported greater benefits in all areas (pain, sleep, depression, and anxiety) at 12 weeks post-treatment when compared to the study participants who received multi-modal therapy without chiropractic care. Additionally, those positive results were lasting as the subjects reported continued improvement one full year later.

Fibromyalgia can greatly reduce your quality of life, both mentally and physically. If you're suffering from fibromyalgia, we might be able to help.

Chiropractic Helps Relieve Herniated Disc Problems

Rockville chiropractic disc herniation treatmentUnfortunately, many of our Rockville patients know the pain associated with a herniated disc all too well. Fortunately, Dr. Sarabi has helped many people with disc pain, and a number of scientific studies have confirmed that chiropractic can help people recover from this kind of condition.

Research on Chiropractic for Disc Herniations

In one study, doctors from Switzerland recruited 148 patients who were suffering with pain in their low back and legs due to a herniated disc (which was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI). Each person then received chiropractic adjustments that focused on the location of his or her disc problem.

Data was collected after the preliminary treatment session at set intervals--namely, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year--to ascertain what type of short-term and long-term effects, if any, chiropractic offers when it comes to treating this particular problem. Among the data obtained was the person's self-reported changes in both back and leg pain.

Investigators found that, overall, the patients reported "significant improvement" for both types of pain every time the results were collected. In fact, over 90% of the study participants reported that their pain "improved" within the first three months, with 88% still citing improvement one year after their first treatment session.

Even those test subjects who were defined as "chronic" still reported an improvement in pain at a rate of 89 percent one year beyond when treatment first began. This is the same positive result that was found in the following case study.

Case Study Shows that Chiropractic Benefits Chronic Disc Herniation Symptoms

In this paper, a 26-year-old man had presented with disc herniation symptoms such as pain in the low back, left leg, and left groin area, along with left foot drop and muscle weakness. He had endured these symptoms for more than two years after sustaining an athletic injury, and his disc herniation was confirmed via MRI.

After receiving chiropractic, "The patient responded favorably and his multi-symptom complex resolved within 90 days of treatment." Furthermore, the patient was still experiencing relief one year after the chiropractic intervention.

Studies like these show how helpful chiropractic can be when it comes to alleviating herniated disc pain and relieving the symptoms they bring about. So, if you are suffering from back pain caused by a herniated disc and want to find some relief, chiropractic may well be an effective solution.

Chiropractic Beneficial for Carpal Tunnel

Rockville natural carpal tunnel treatmentDr. Sarabi sees a lot of people troubled with carpal tunnel syndrome in our busy Rockville chiropractic office. While some people think that the source of this wrist-related pain is muscular, it's actually a syndrome that arises from the nerves--and not just the nerves in your hands.

Research Proves Chiropractic Helps With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A recent study printed in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy assessed 71 women between the ages of 35 and 59 who were diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. Upon studying the subjects' neck range of motion, the authors discovered that the women had reduced cervical mobility when compared to a healthy control group.

In addition, they also observed that the level of the women's reported carpal tunnel pain was related to the lateral flexion of the cervical spine. In short, the less flexibility in the neck area, the greater the level of pain.

This research is extremely important, as you cannot successfully treat a problem until you fully understand its source. By realizing that the root of carpal tunnel pain is in the neck, this means that all-natural approaches like chiropractic can often restore normal function, reducing the need for risky surgical procedures.

Chiropractic and Medical Care: An Effective Combination

Rockville back pain treatmentWe see many back pain patients in our Rockville practice, and Dr. Sarabi has been able to help many of them get relief through various chiropractic techniques. However, dealing with back pain doesn't necessarily mean having to make a choice between chiropractic care and medical therapy, as many individuals use both types of care with great results.

Research Confirms Chiropractic and Medical Care Work Well with Each Other

In a study published by the medical journal Spine experts1 looked at a group of active-duty military personnel between the ages of 18 and 35 who claimed both acute soreness and restricted function due to back-related issues. Some of the patients received treatment via standard medical therapy, while the rest were given chiropractic adjustments as well as regular medical care, as researchers wanted to see which patients fared better.

The authors found that the group that received standard medical care in combination with chiropractic scored "significantly better" than the patients who received medical care alone; 73% reported positive benefits in comparison to just 17% of the medical treatment only group who reported the same amount of improvement. This was true regarding both pain and level of function at the two- and four-week marks.

Accordingly, incorporating these two forms of care can greatly benefit you--the patient--offering advantages when compared to medical care alone. However, while chiropractic and medical approaches can work alongside each other, chiropractic offers some distinct strengths over medical treatment.

Where Chiropractic Care Wins

Although it might seem as if each approach plays a 50-50 role, there is one major benefit that chiropractic has over medical treatment and that is in patient satisfaction. In fact, a study from UCLA2 that was published in the American Journal of Public Health reports that, on average, chiropractic patients are generally more satisfied with their recovery than people undergoing medical care.

According to the researchers, the main aspects that patients favored over medical treatment were "self-care advice and explanation of treatment." This isn't unexpected, as chiropractors frequently spend much more time consulting with their patients as to how they can better their health on their own, as well as outlining more carefully what to expect from chiropractic.

Chiropractic Care Offers a Non-Invasive Approach

Certainly, the methods associated with chiropractic are very different than those provided with medical treatment, but a large amount of the difference is the fact that chiropractic is a natural approach to health and well-being. In contrast to focusing on just relieving the symptoms, chiropractic means tracking down the root cause of your pain, which often translates to greater improvement as you are addressing the problem at its source.

Furthermore, while medication is sometimes helpful for managing certain conditions, many health issues respond well to a natural approach like chiropractic care. This means fewer negative side effects from drugs and lasting results.

You don't have to struggle with back pain or other health issues. Give our Rockville clinic a call today at (240) 418-9239. We'll do everything we can to help you get and continue to be free from back pain.

Shoulder Pain and Auto Injury

We work with many auto injury cases in in our Rockville office, and a common symptom we see in our patients is shoulder pain. Let's look at the root cause of shoulder pain after an auto injury and see how chiropractic can help.

There are at least two different ways that you can get shoulder pain after a crash: by direct injury to the shoulder joint or by referred pain from the neck.

Direct injury can be caused by hitting your shoulder on a hard surface in the car during the crash, or can occur if you have a tight grip on the steering wheel during a rear end collision. With this type of injury, you'll often be aware of the pain shortly after the wreck.

More frequently, Dr. Sarabi finds that shoulder or arm pain doesn't immediately appear after a crash, but begins a few days or weeks after the trauma. This type of shoulder pain actually starts in the neck. Injured soft tissue in your spine can pinch nerves in your neck, causing numbness, tingling, or soreness in your shoulder, elbow, or wrist.

We've worked with many types of shoulder pain in our Rockville office. This care involves chiropractic adjustments to restore your spine's natural mobility and exercises that strengthen your neck and shoulder.

Dr. Sarabi has been helping patients in Rockville since 2000, so we know what you're living with. We're here to help you, too. The first step is to get an accurate diagnosis to determine what's causing your pain and then we will determine an appropriate treatment plan of action. Chiropractic Can Provide Asthma Relief

Rockville asthma care with chiropracticAsthma is a big concern for many people in Rockville and for a society as a whole, since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that this condition currently affects almost 19 million adults and 7 million kids in the US. A full-blown asthma attack likely means a hospital visit. Fortunately, Dr. Sarabi has helped many people in Rockville get relief from asthma symptoms.

Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Asthma

The scientific research verifies what we see in our practice. For instance, a study published in Clinical and Experimental Allergy assessed 31 adult asthma patients after getting four weeks of chiropractic adjustments. The researchers reported that the patients who received chiropractic adjustments had a 34% decrease in asthma symptoms.

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics published another asthma-based study, except this one involved kids. In this paper, the 36 participants ranged from 6 to 17 years in age and their asthma was regarded as either mild or moderate in severity.

After 12 weeks of chiropractic adjustments, as a whole, the patients reported a higher quality of life and a reduced level of severity. As a bonus, they also indicated that they depended less on their bronchodilator and these positive effects lasted one year after chiropractic care was finished.

Chiropractic Proven Safe

Rockville Chiropractic for familiesWe see a large number of patients in our Rockville clinic, and Dr. Sarabi has helped countless people overcome a range of health problems. In spite of this, a frequent concern that seems to stop a lot of women and men from pursuing treatment is whether or not chiropractic care is safe. Fortunately, according to three different studies (out of quite a few on the issue), the answer to this concern is a resounding: "Yes! Chiropractic is safe!"

Australian Study: Chiropractic is Safe

The first research paper(1) was published in Spine and involved 183 women and men. Each test subject was affected by spinal pain, and half of the patients received actual chiropractic care visits while the other half were given two sham chiropractic treatments. Information was collected after each real or fake adjustment to determine whether or not any undesirable reactions occurred as a result of the genuine chiropractic adjustments.

The authors found that none of the patients reported any serious adverse adverse reactions whatsoever after receiving one or two sessions of chiropractic. Some people did state that they got a headache (just 9% of people) or muscle stiffness (37%) after treatment, but the results were not serious.

Nationwide Survey Confirms that Chiropractic is Safe

The second study(2), also released in the distinguished medical journal, Spine, was performed in an attempt to establish the safety of chiropractic. The test group was much larger -- 20,000 patients. Each participant received chiropractic adjustments of the cervical spine, with over 50,000 total adjustments for all study participants.

Once again, the researchers found no serious adverse side effects. The experts computed the risk of total negative effects to be approximately 6 out of every 10,000 consultations or every 100,000 treatment sessions. And, just as with the previous study, some individuals did report non-serious, milder, unwanted effects such as dizziness (less than 2%) or a headache (4%), and this prompted the researchers to determine that "the risk of a serious adverse event, immediately or up to 7 days after treatment, was low to very low."

Chiropractic Adjustments are Safe for Your Children

The third research paper(3) is different from the first two pieces of research, as it concentrates on the safety of chiropractic care for kids. In this article, the authors investigated data reported by both chiropractors and parents involving 816 children who participated in 7,173 chiropractic adjustments.

Out of 5,438 chiropractic visits made for the young ones, chiropractors answering the survey reported only three cases where there were negative side effects. When parents were questioned, they indicated only two adverse side effects out of 1,735 visits. Additionally, both chiropractors and parents reported "a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints."

Based on studies like these, chiropractic has been found to be safe and effective for everyone. To learn what chiropractic care can do for you, call our Rockville office and make an appointment today at (240) 418-9239.

Back Pain and Auto Injury

If you have back pain after an auto injury, don't worry. Dr. Sarabi sees this type of problem very often in our Rockville office. The key to recovering from back pain caused by a crash is to understand the root cause of the problem and how chiropractic care can help.

During a rear-end car crash, your car and car seat are rapidly accelerated forward against your torso. Since car seats don't perfectly align with the curve of your spinal column, the car seat can put inconsistent force on your back. This can cause some of your spinal vertebrae to move in one direction while an adjacent vertebrae might move in another direction. This differential motion can sprain or strain the structures that hold your spine together. This kind of injury can cause chronic back pain if not treated promptly. Thankfully, chiropractic is one of the most effective ways to treat back pain.

Dr. Sarabi is here in Rockville to help you recover from back pain. We've been helping patients since 2000 and we can probably help you, too. First, we'll do a careful evaluation to figure out the root cause of your pain, and then decide how to restore your body's natural functioning. Call us today at (240) 418-9239 if you have questions or would like to make an appointment.
